   Thermoviscous acoustic propagation in a tube with corrugated isothermal rigid walls is considered. At long wavelengths, it amounts to a 1D transmission line equation, in which the coefficients depend on the solution to a 2D diffusion problem. These coefficients are shown to display predictable behaviors at low, high, and intermediate frequencies. These results are demonstrated on a numerical example.

   Playing wind historical instruments is often conflicting with conservation and protection of museum collections. Some musical and acoustical properties of these instruments therefore remain unknown. Theoretical models can predict some of these properties from the only knowledge of the instruments geometry. A collaboration between Makutu Inria Bordeaux Sud Ouest team, Musée de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, Institut Technologique Européen des Métiers de la Musique (ITEMM) at Le Mans and the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF), lead to a procedure hereby applied to the museum collection Besson, which was a leading manufacture of wind instruments, and more specifically to several natural trumpets dating from the early 20th century. The geometry of the instruments has been measured non invasively by means of X-ray tomography in C2RMF. After extracting their bore (evolution of the inner diameter), their entry impedance has been computed. For one specific trumpet (E.0925), simulated data have been compared to measurements with excellent agreement. Despite many uncertainties on the way these instruments were played, simulated sounds can be computed. An « acoustical facsimile » of E.0925 has been crafted from the X-ray and impedance data, and played by a professional natural trumpet player. This allows to compare simulated sounds with human played sounds.

   Sound synthesis of a pipe coupled with a reed requires to finely tune the physical parameters of the underlying model. Although the pipe geometry is often well known, the 1 degree of freedom reed model’s parameters are effective coefficients (mass, section, etc) and are difficult to assess. Studies of this coupled system have essentially focused on models without the reed induced flow, and have exhibited two dimensionless parameters, which respectively describe the ratio between feeding pressure and closing reed pressure, and a dimensionless opening of the reed at rest. Including the reed flow in the model, then performing a scaling of the equations, leads to a new third dimensionless quantity that we will call kappa. Varying the reed frequency with constant parameters on different pipe dimensions shows a certain stability of the model once put under this form. Using a real-time sound synthesis tool, the parameter space is explored while the damping of the reed is also varied.

   L’acoustique musicale est la discipline qui cherche à expliquer le fonctionnement physique des instruments de musique. Elle se base sur une approche liant les sciences expérimentales, la modélisation mathématique et les techniques de simulation informatique. Les instruments de musique sont hautement complexes et font intervenir des couplages entre des phénomènes physiques variés. Cet exposé tentera de balayer les problématiques rencontrées en matière de modélisation et de simulation des instruments de musique, en mettant l’accent sur la finalité des modèles physiques, leurs forces et faiblesses, et les enjeux dans les contextes de synthèse sonore ou d’aide à la facture instrumentale. Des focus sur certaines parties spécifiques des instruments viendront illustrer le nécessaire compromis entre prédictibilité et efficacité, tandis que des exemples concrets de projets menés en partenariat avec des luthiers ou des musées montreront la richesse mais aussi la difficulté de confronter les modèles aux situations réelles.
